About My Virtual Blood Drive
I have always believed that service is not something you do when it is convenient. It is something you build into how you live. As an atmospheric science student at Purdue University, I am drawn to fields where my work directly protects and serves others, and organizing a virtual blood drive through Vitalant is an extension of that same instinct. Blood donation is one of the most immediate ways a person can save a life. No special equipment, no years of training, just showing up. I wanted to create an opportunity for my community to do exactly that.
Growing up, I was raised with a strong emphasis on showing up for others. That value has shaped every path I have chosen, from pursuing a career in atmospheric science where accurate forecasts protect lives, to stepping up as a leader in my campus community, to organizing this blood drive. Service is not a box to check. It is the reason behind the work. I chose atmospheric science because it is one of the few fields where the quality of your work has an immediate and tangible impact on real people. A timely warning can evacuate a neighborhood. A clear forecast can help a family make a decision that keeps them safe. That sense of responsibility is something I carry into everything I do, including this blood drive.
The need for blood does not pause. Hospitals depend on a steady supply to treat patients in emergencies, surgeries, and long-term care. One donation can save up to three lives, and yet donor shortages remain a persistent challenge. Organizing a virtual blood drive felt like a direct and meaningful way to address that gap. By making the process accessible and bringing the opportunity to people where they already are, I hoped to lower the barrier and inspire my peers to take action. Encouraging even a handful of people to donate for the first time felt worth every bit of effort it took to put this together.
As an out-of-state student balancing tuition costs, loan debt, and plans to continue through a master's and Ph.D. program, with my parents having supported multiple college educations and a third on the way, financial support makes a real difference in what I am able to pursue. This scholarship would ease that burden and allow me to stay focused on the service-driven work, like this blood drive, that I believe matters most. Organizing this drive is not just an extracurricular. It is an extension of the same commitment that guides my academic path: the belief that you can and should use your position to actively help people. Whether that means issuing a tornado warning or encouraging someone to donate blood, the principle is the same. Show up for others when it counts.
